A critter trail cage is too small for the two mice and that could have caused the fighting. Ideally, the cage itself is almost too small for one mouse (in my opinion). Although they say that a 10 gallon tank can hold up to 4 mice, its not recommended. Male mice will fight for dominance, so a larger cage helps to stop this. You can easily get a 10 gallon tank for around $10. You could get some of the critter trail tubes and have them connect from the cage into a 10 gallon tank (just make sure it has a tight fitting lid!).
If you connect the two with tubes it allows the two mice to be able to be together, but to also have their seperate time and space. If you dont want to do it this way, get another critter trail mini cage and connect those two, that way it will give you double of everything which will also help to minimize the fighting (such as over food, water, the wheel etc).
Hope this helps.
