There are a couple of possibilities.
First one that comes to mind is a software package available from X10.com, though the software there tends to be designed for use with x10 products, as well as other software packages.
Second is a generic term known as Frame Grabber. This used to refer only to hardware, but now there are many programs capable of recording, archiving, as well as alerting on changes in video. The list is long, but a google search will yield many hits for you to ponder. The frame grabber software packages will probably tend to work with any video source, since most will use the Video For Windows driver model (Windows 9x), or a WDM (Windows Driver Model, Windows 2K, XP). Be careful about running a piece of software designed for Win9X under XP, XP may not like the Video For Windows components the software may try to install.
